Official U.K. release English language Strategy Guide for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty on the Playstation 2. This was re-released in 2003 alongside Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, and had an additional supplement that covered the extra features of the Substance edition of the game.
This guide brings back fond memories. I had completed MGS2 Christmas time 2002, but I loved it so much I wanted to get my hands on artwork and find out more about the game. So when ‘Substance’ came about, I wasn’t as hardcore as I am now, I gave my copy of ‘Sons of Liberty’ to my friend and I bought the new version that superseeded it, along with that purchase, I bought this official guide and the accompanying supplement that documented the extras in ‘Substance’.
Before that date, I’d never gone anywhere near a strategy guide and always steered clear of them. But this wasn’t a purchase to use as a cheat or a “get-out”, it was bought because I had a genuine passion to learn more about the ins and outs of the game, it’s creators, the artists and the backstory. All of which are covered superbly in this and the other Piggyback strategy guides.
It is this guide and the release of Substance that made me into a collector. Seeing the graphics and artwork that had gone into the game through the strategy guide, seeing all the subtleties and intricacies that Hideo Kojima and his team had taken the time to put in there, really inspired me. From that moment on, I wanted to collect anything and everythin MGS, but until now, have never been able to.
